This sort of thing is rampant here in the states as well. What good is a book that no one can hold or even take a picture of?What is the value of information if it is "preserved"but can not be accessed?Or only accessed by "scholars"?It's MY history and MY tax money often that is doing the preserving but I can't have the info.,take a pic. or touch it.Not the way to teach caring about historical items.Thank you for voicing on this topic.

Hello. I wanted to send you a quick note regarding your story of William Law's tannery. I am an ancestor of William Law & Elisabeth Stanners. William and Elisabeth had a daughter named Helen who married William Cockburn, a shoemaker of Linlithgow. I'm sure you've seen it already, but William Law (married to Elisabeth Stanners) had a will that I found to be an intersting read.

I would be very intersted to hear from you and to possibly exchange some information if you are interested.

Take care,

Wade Pennell.

Alex - thanks for that LOL Both Williams are recorded as children of James Cowan & Margaret Henderson & I haven't found another couple with exactly the same names in the village. The family is poorly recorded almost without exception, but I shall keep going. Thanks for your thought-provoking comment.

At the risk of making things worse - could another (probably remote) possibility be that there were TWO sets of James and Margaret Cowans in Airth at the same time? Or that James had two consecutive wives named Margaret who both insisted on their son being called William? Neither of these would help you pinpoint which William is yours though :(

My mother made an elaborate cross-stitch piece that she called the Mother Tree. It was, of course, a lovely tree which had the names of the mothers in our family going back about 10 generations. Her mother had done all the research. I'm not even sure how you'd decide which tree branches to follow in such an endeavor; the further back you go, of course, the more relatives you run into. I'll have to see if I can dig up that cross-stitch...

This is so true. And it is often the "wife of" "or husband of" that I wish was a blood relative and are very often my favorite.

Lovely to see you posting again! I really like this entry about Martha. She sounds kind, clever and very resourceful. Wish I could get some pointers from her on how to get by with no source of income and small children!
